Overview

Installs an outside air temperature probe in the wing for better airflow stability than a fuselage-mounted probe. Van's stated plan is to mount the OAT probe on the fuselage underside, out of the direct exhaust stream. Some builders are skeptical of any underside location due to heat influence — hence this wing-mount alternative.

Installation Location

Bottom of wing, outboard of the fuel tank, inboard of the strut attach fitting.

Parts Required

  • Garmin G3X LRU OAT probe kit
  • Scrap aluminum (for fabricating a doubler)

Installation Notes

  • Uses an existing 5/8" hole in the main spar — no additional drilling required.
  • Fabricate a small doubler from scrap aluminum to reinforce the skin mounting

location.

  • Install before the leading edge skins are closed (during Section 29 or 30).
