RV-15 Wing Kit — Important Notification for Builders

Dear RV-15 Builder

We've received a very small number of reports about hole alignment on the RV-15 main spar reinforcement angle not lining up cleanly during dry-fit. We are aware of this issue and are looking into both the causes of it and solutions for builders. At this time, we believe these are isolated examples and not indicative of a widespread issue.

For reference, take a look at the RV-15 Kit Assembly Instruction Section 29, Page 6.

WHAT WE KNOW

Matched-hole tooling is designed so parts self-jig once clamped, meaning the holes should pull into alignment once clecos are inserted and the assembly is drawn together, even if they look slightly off before clamping. A small offset at dry-fit, before clecos go in, is not on its own a sign of a bad part.

The area that may have the reinforcing angle misalignment can be found on the top of the main spar, a few rivet holes inboard from where the aft J-section spar reinforcement ends (red circle).

WHAT TO DO

If you're working on the wing assembly (refer to RV-15 KAI Section 29, Page 6), go ahead and cleco it up as you normally would. While builder techniques vary, we suggest that every third hole be secured with a cleco clamp.

If the holes still don't align once clamped, stop there and reach out to us before drilling or forcing anything. Use our Technical Support Intake Form to send us photos of the misalignment with clecos installed, along with your kit serial number, and we’ll work with you toward a safe, durable solution.

Sincerely
